If you agreed no payment date

By law the payment is late 30 days after the customer receives the invoice or you deliver, whichever is later. On these dates that is .

How invoice payment terms work

Net 30 means the customer must pay within 30 days of the invoice date. Net 7, net 14 and net 60 work the same way. Calendar days count every day, including weekends and bank holidays. Business days count Monday to Friday and skip bank holidays, which pushes the due date later.

Write the due date itself on the invoice, not just the terms. It removes any doubt about when the payment becomes late.

What the law says

  • If you agree a payment date, the payment is late the day after it.
  • If you do not agree one, it is late 30 days after the customer receives the invoice or you deliver the goods or service, whichever is later.
  • Terms between businesses are usually no longer than 60 days. Longer terms must be agreed and fair. Public authorities must usually pay within 30 days.

Once a payment is late you can usually charge statutory interest and fixed compensation. Use our late payment interest calculator to work it out.

What an invoice must include

A unique number, your business name and contact details, the customer's name and address, what you are charging for, the supply date, the invoice date, the amounts, any VAT and the total owed.

Questions people ask

What does net 30 mean on an invoice?

The customer has 30 days from the invoice date to pay. An invoice dated 29 October 2026 on net 30 terms is due.

Do payment terms count weekends?

Usually yes. Net terms normally mean calendar days unless the contract says business or working days. If you use business days, say so on the invoice.

What if the due date falls on a weekend or bank holiday?

The calculator tells you and shows the next working day. Which date counts depends on your terms, so make it clear on the invoice.

What is the longest payment term allowed in the UK?

Between businesses, agreed terms are usually no longer than 60 days, unless both sides agree longer terms and they are fair. Public authorities must usually pay within 30 days.

When is an invoice late if no terms were agreed?

30 days after the customer receives the invoice or you deliver the goods or service, whichever is later.

Which bank holidays does the calculator skip?

The official GOV.UK list for England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, from 2019 to the end of 2028. You choose the region.
